Good Radiators Make Effective Central Heating Systems

by Tal Potishman

Take a modern car as an example. The engine creates the power by burning fuel. The power is then transferred by the wheels and tyres to pull the car forward. In the central heating world, the engine is your boiler and the wheels and tyres are your wall hung radiators. Just like in cars, a well designed and sized radiator is crucial for effective heat transfer from the boiler into the room and as such guarantee an effective and economic performance of your central heating system.

It might come as a surprise that those sleek looking stainless steel radiators offered by most UK plumbing and heating merchants date back more than 150 years. The first radiator was registered as a patent in 1855 by Franz Sangalli, a German engineer. In effect, despite considerable visual differences, the main working structure of the radiator is the same as the ones registered initially by Mr. Sangalli. The radiators are effectively a hollow case made of metal, shaped as a flat box and attached to the wall to maximize radiation of heat into the room.

UK made radiators are typically made of sheet steel with fins to emit more heat. The heating liquid, normally water, is pumped into the radiator. The hot liquid loses its heat into the room and as it cools off it drops to the bottom of the radiator and eventually is pumped out via the return valve. The air around the radiator heats up and consequently rises to the top of the room, drawing in cooler air. This convection effect keeps a circulation of heating within the room and constant heat within the home.

Like many closed loop systems with a heat transfer liquid within them, the radiators and the pipes develop air pockets. Over time air bubbles are seeping through tiny cracks in the system causing air pockets. By using a professional plumber you would reduce the risk of such air pockets as they are likely to use good quality compression fittings that minimize the risk of such cracks.

An alternative explanation for the bubbles within the circulation loop is that they are the result of a chemical reaction that occurs when copper piping and other metals are in continuous contact with very hot water. Such reactions lead to tiny bubbles of hydrogen that float within the system and find their way to the upper most point of the closed loop heating system. This explains why it is often the top of the radiator that remains cold (as it is filled with gas rather than hot water). Is such cases it is recommended to bleed the radiator from the bleeding valve at the top of the radiator, using a special bleeding key. Such keys can be found in all major DIY stores in the UK.

Another common problem affecting radiators is a build up of sludge. Since hot water rubs against iron, copper and other metals within the closed central heating loop, the resulting chemical reaction creates not only gases but also chemical deposits. Such chemical deposits remain in the sealed system and clog the pipes, reducing their performance and effectiveness.

Such corrosion can be addressed and prevented by ensuring that the plumber installing your central heating system adds a chemical corrosion inhibitor into the closed circulation loop. Prior to doing this most plumbers these days go one step further and actually power flush the system to remove any build up and debris that might have accumulated within the pipes. Even new systems may require a power flush to remove debris that has been there as a result of the manufacturing processes of the pipes and the radiators.

Lighting Packages Make Kicthen Remodeling Easy

by John Bakers

Remodeling the kitchen is a pretty big task. You should tackle one thing at a time in order to make the transition smooth and to cut down on the stress and strain of the remodeling process. When you begin to remodel the counter tops you will need to take a lot of things into consideration to get the job done right. Depending on the current condition of the existing countertops you may need to put in all new countertops or just refinish the existing ones. When it comes to laminated counter tops, dealing with glue can be a hassle, but it is easier if you how to deal with it.

The Easiest Solution

The easiest way to remodel kitchen countertops is to completely install new ones. However, if your existing counter tops are in good shape then it could be more budget friendly to use them and just update them. How do you decide? Just use your own judgment, look at costs and examine what you already have. If the basic structure and condition of them are fine then use them. However, if you have a laminate top you might decide the time involved is too much and decide to replace. Take your budget and time into consideration, too.

Removing old laminate tops involves using special solvent to loosen the glue. You have to be especially careful not to gouge the wood during the removal process. After you have the tops off you will need to smooth out the surface. If you just need to refinish wooden tops then go ahead and remove the old finish and apply the new finish.

If you decide that replacing is the best option then you start by removing the old countertop. You will need to loosen it and pull it off. You will also need to clean the area and sand it down to ensure it is level.

Options

The type of surface you use to replace your countertops is purely your choice and will be based upon your budget and taste. The home improvement stores offer many options. You can get pre-made counter tops that come cut and ready to install. This is going to be the least time consuming choice. If you want a richer look then go for granite or stone. Be aware, though, these are heavy, hard to work with and quite expensive. You will almost always want to order these pre-cut, so measuring for fit is very important and must be accurate.

Enhancing the Finished Job

To enhance your newly installed counter tops you should consider some track lighting. These specially placed and focused lights can really add a charm to your new counter tops. You can easily find a variety of styles that will work with your kitchen. While you are installing the counter tops, installing some lighting fixtures is a simple task that will not add much time to the job, but will add a lot to the final look.

Montessori Education for Children

by David Bostwick

Montessori Schools and Montessori education methods for small children In the field of education of small children have been widely accepted the world over. It is a tremendous tribute to Italian educator Dr. Maria Montessori. Few of us know that Dr. Maria Montessori developed her concepts about educational methods for children in the late 19th century while she was studying educational environment of children with physical and mental disabilities.

Montessori schools teach the same subjects as covered by preschool curriculum but by Montessori approach. Dr. Montessori’s approach to children’s education is based upon the concept that children do not develop and think the way adults do and that children choose from among the resources and materials available to them and set direction to their own learning. The teacher’s role is to provide suitable material to children and then remain a “silent presence” in the classroom.

The Montessori learning method is based on the premise that a child has an absorbent mind up to the age of six and that he is strongly motivated to understand and perfect his skills within his environment. Young children have a capacity of learning by repetitious activities within specific sensitive periods; for example, his incessant babbling, which to us is quite incomprehensible, is his language practice which leads to his competence in language.

Elementary schooling generally starts at the age of five or six; however, smaller children can learn and can absorb knowledge quickly, and they have interest and inquisitiveness about the world around them. This naturally makes them suitable to receive education. Montessori learning methods are quite suitable for this condition even though the children are not yet fit for regular elementary education.

Montessori education methods are applied mainly in preschool and elementary school settings. Kindergarten is another form of schooling that is also popular as a preschool system. It provides the transition from the home atmosphere to the formal schooling. Children are taught to develop basic skills through play and they are taught social interaction. Children of age groups of three and four enroll into Pre K (pre-kindergarten) school which provides an environment very similar to that provided by Montessori schools.

Montessori education has been most popular in USA; there are about 4,000 Montessori schools in the USA. Montessori education is a part of the preschool education in America. With about 8,000 Montessori schools the world over, you can find Montessori schools almost anywhere in the world

Children of preschool age were the focus of Dr. Montessori’s initial work. In later years she along with her son took up research in adapting her approach to elementary schools also. Towards the end of her life she described how her teaching methods could be applied to further educational levels such as secondary schooling and colleges.

There are many schools that may misrepresent by using the name of Montessori school since “Montessori” is not a trade mark. Parents need to be cautious in enrolling their children in Montessori school.

Love, Art, Humor And Widowhood

by Donna J. Skinner

A few years ago I had quite a different life. I suddenly found myself a young single mother with three children to journey through life with. My neuvo-unmarried status was not a choice of mine. Fate had dealt me a losing hand. Never would I have imagined that when I kissed my husband good-bye that fateful morning it would be our last kiss.

My children greeted me as I arrived home later that evening. They seemed concerned that their father had not arrived home. I made frantic phone calls to friends and relatives. I had a feeling deep within my core that something was horribly wrong. My feelings were confirmed a short while later when I noticed a car slowly approach my house. My oldest daughter sensed something was amiss. There was a knock on the door. She pleaded with me not to answer.

I did so anyway, only to find a policeman with a sad look in his eyes. I knew before he told me what he was going to say. Call it a sixth sense. . I immediately fell to my knees, I childishly covered my ears with my hands and threw the phone at him. On the phone was my husbands’ brother whom I had been speaking with at the time. I heard the detectives words they burned deep into my being. He informed me that my husband was dead. For the next several weeks I was living in a fog.

Close friends and family took over the daily routine of my life until I was through the initial shock. However the pain remained relentless. There was pain in every breathe I took and every thought I felt. Pain it was my constant companion, It kept me company in those long sleepless nights. The nights were always the worst. Darkness begets darkness. My pain was so immense that it burned through my veins circulating through my heart. There was no reprise. Pain ruled my impulses. At one point I considered ending it all. I plotted my own demise. It would have been so easy. So easy to curl up into a fetal position and reverse life. At one point I ran my car off the road only to turn the wheel back at the point of no return. I had pills. I had a gun. I toyed with these ideas, like a cat toys with its prey right before it pounces. The idea of the gun seemed most appropriate as it would be quick and no changing of my mind at the last minute.

I had a lucid thought, who would clean the mess up? I began to laugh uncontrollably, then came the tears. I slept that night a long restful sleep. I awoke the next morning with a plan. Laughter and a plan, they have carried me far. I now enjoy life. I am a proud mother and grandmother of beautiful grown and infant children. I love life, humor, theater and the arts. Life goes on, and, surprisingly, it has only just begun.

Simple Ideas for Great Home Renovations

by Ray Walberg

Wishes, dreams and aspirations surely have no ends. It is a human trait to always aspire for a living that is better and more luxurious than the one that already exists. It is the home we live in, our abode that gets the highest amount of attention in this, with each one of us almost always striving for a better home, improved surroundings and finer facilities.

However universal as they might be, a majority of the home renovation ideas, in all their grandeur are often shelved due to the extensive amount of efforts and costs involved. Nevertheless, with some smart and simple ideas, it is indeed possible to achieve that dream home of yours and that too, well within your budget.

Areas of Attention

Well, to begin with, take a long hard look at your house. Which are the areas which are used most often, both by the family members and well as guests? Most often, these areas are the functional portions of the house, including the kitchen, bathrooms and sometimes the living rooms or the lounge area. Many times, there are small but practical and visible renovations that can be made to these portions which can give the entire house a facelift such as new window treatments.

For instance, a highly effective home renovation idea for a more comfortable living is to replace the old kitchen bathroom cabinets with new ones, or at least add some extra storage space to these. Apart from the functional changes, a few cosmetic changes such as a paint-touch up or a mended hole can also serve the purpose well.

The Glam Touch

If you feel that your house is serving just the right purpose but still strive for that added glamorous look, you can rather add up to the existing portions of the house. For instance, if you have an open backyard that is not really put to much of use, you can rather cover it up and convert it into some sort of an entertainment area. Probably, you will require additional electrical fittings and plumbing, but the effort will surely give your house the ideal remodeled look.

A few other very common home renovation ideas to enhance everyday comfort include building up a patio to a back door of your home. In addition, a deck added to the patio will further complete that look of luxury, giving you the perfect way to fulfill your wishes of home renovations.

However, when taking up such home renovation projects for adding comfort to the everyday life, it is very important to keep the budgets well in control and also to take on renovations only in a phased and systematic manner.
