Using Positive Reinforcement Method for Dog Obedience Training

by jim crihfield

Dog obedience training is certainly not a very trouble-free job. There are some factors that could pose as roadblocks, such as communication differences. However, it is important that you provide him with proper dog behavior training, so both of you can discover how to co-exist agreeably.

Here are several positive reinforcement methods that you can apply:

1. Come up with commands. One of the keys to basic dog obedience is coming up with your own commands or cue words. These are terms that will allow him to perform a specific action. The common ones like sit, come, sleep, still, stand should be taught while your dog is still young, so he can have more time to make them a habit. Moreover, practicing this will help you take more control on the responses and movements of your dog.

Remember when coming up with commands. It is important to stay consistent. This will help you from confusing your dog. If you want your dog to remain still use either still or stay. Do not try to use them both switching back and forth that will bring your dog confusion.

2. Unearth the reward system. Think about it when you’re at work, doesn’t the reward system work. You work harder to get that bonus if your place in employment offers you one to achieve a certain quota. So when you’re using dog obedience training, give a reward. If your dog makes a good decision over something, or if your dog follows your instructions properly, give them a reward. It doesn’t have to be treats all the time. Some dogs will be pleased about it if you can spend time with them afterward.

If you’re concerned about your dog becoming obese, consuming all those treats, a great reward is giving them lots of love and affection. Another great reward is playing a game of fetch. Trust me; they will love you for the attention.

3. Use online dog obedience training programs. If you read what experts have to say, you will have better insight on how to go about more difficult situations. You don’t have to completely rely on your own ability when it comes to dog obedience training. Remember instruction is vital, and these programs can give you an education on how to deal with dog problem behaviors like a dog chewing on a remote control, yanking on a leash or other aggressive behaviors. They can help teach you how to become the pack leader.

4. Build a strong connection with your dog. It is vital that your dog trust you. It is much easier to teach dogs new tricks and commands when they do. For that to happen, your dog must be your best friend. Use positive reinforcement to teach and not corporal punishment. Make them feel safe and secure and give them plenty of love and attention.

What is a Maine Coon Cat

by John Savage

The Maine Coon Cat which must be one of the biggest of the domestic breed of cats is readily recogised by its lovely bushy tail and its striped and long fur. The Maine Coon Cat belongs to North America and not surprisingly is a native of the state of Maine, and it is the State Cat.

For over a century now we have been able to enjoy the Maine Coon, a cat that seems to be so well suited to the often harsh winters of New England, with their well shaped paws and thick, thick fur. Fur which is so well able to resist water.

As with so many domestic animals, a number of legends have grown up around them, some which may be true, and others which definitely are not. It has been suggested that the Maine Coon is a product of the domestic cat and the raccoon mating, but most experts think this is not possible. Other suggestions are that the native North American cat mated with the Vikings cat, and this is a possibility because of the similarity between the Maine Coon and the Norwegian Forest Cat.

At one time only the brown tabbie was considered to be a proper Maine Coon, any cat of a different color was called a Maine Shag Cat. The people who have studied the Maine Coon over the years are generally of the opinion that long haired cats from overseas, probably Europe, mated with the domestic short haired cat, and produced what we know today as the Maine Coon.

Maine Coons have very special personaities similar in many ways to the family dog. Call out their name, and they will come bounding towards you. Go out for the day, and on your return you will find them eagerly waiting for you on the doorstep. They love people, and other animals, and in return they like a lot of love and attention themselves.

You may or may not be aware that cat shows have been taking place around the country since 1861, and it was in the 1900’s, with the introduction of the Persian cat, that the Maine Coons popularity began to wane. But they bounced back again in the 1950’s and their own Association was formed in 1968, the Maine Coon Breeders and Fanciers Association, with the express purpose of protecting the breed. However it was another 12 years before all the cat registries recognized the breed.

Nowadays there are many, many people who are fortunate enough to own, exhibit and love a Maine Coon Cat. The Association which was founded many years ago by a mere six breeders has now grown to well over 200 breeders, and there are over 2000 other members who are not breeders as well.
